CE SUPERVISORS: Community Employment (CE) Supervisors and participants play a key role in the provision of much needed services within their communities. They look after community halls, GAA and soccer pitches, church and school areas, and maintenance of green areas, and lots more. The scheme is designed to help disadvantaged people or those in long-term unemployment to gain work in the local community as a stepping stone to regular work. The 1,250 Supervisors, and Ass-Supervisors who manage the local projects on a day-to-day basis are crucial to the success of the schemes. They lead the delivery of services by the participants, and mentor, identify and source relevant training for them, which is crucial to their ability to find work.

The supervisor’s role is a non pension one at present despite the Labour Court ruling in their favour in 2008. They have been waiting now for the Government to provide them with a pension scheme, and their patience is running out. They have now launched a campaign of industrial action in order to get the Government to respect the Labour Court ruling and provide a pension scheme for them. In April 2018, the Dail voted to support the call for the implementation of a pension scheme for the supervisors, with only opposition from Fine Gael and the Independence Alliance TDs. The Community Employment Supervisors around the country launched local campaigns on Tuesday. April 16, calling for an immediate meeting with the Minister for Finance and Public Expenditure and Reform, Paschal Donohue, in relation to the outstanding Labour Court recommendation concerning their right to a pension. The next action is a weeklong strike commencing on Monday May 13, which they hope will get some results. The local CE schemes do great work so hopefully the matter will be resolved.
