MARY EGAN: The death has taken place of Mary Egan (nee Costello) late of Coolcappa peacefully at UHL on Monday August 21. The funeral Cortege arrived at St Kyran’s Church Coolcappa on Thursday August 24, for 12 noon Mass. A private Cremation took place afterwards. Sympathy to her husband Chris, son Shane, daughter Natalie, son in law Brendan, daughter in law Bridget, grandchildren, sisters, brothers, nephews, nieces, extended family members and friends. May she rest in Peace.

TOM DOWNES: The death has occurred of Tom Downes, Alan Park., Shannon, Clare and formerly of Ballyine, Old Mill, peacefully, in University Hospital Limerick on Sunday August 20. Predeceased by his wife Helen, brother Mike and sister Dorothy. Reposing took place in Mc Mahon’s Funeral Home, Shannon, on Tuesday August 22) from 6pm to 7.30pm followed by removal to Mary Immaculate Church. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday at 1pm followed by burial afterwards in Illaunmanagh Cemetery. Sympathy to sons Michael and Alan and their partners Diane and Norman, grandchildren Darragh, Katie and Allie, sister Florence, Joan, Kathleen, Mary and Ann, brother Pat, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, extended family, neighbours and friends. May he rest in Peace.

MEMORIAL MASS: A Memorial Mass for John Flavin, Addlestone, Surrey , England and late of Clounleharde, Ballyhahill will be celebrated in the Church of the Visitation, Ballyhahill on Friday September 1 at 7.30pm. Sympathy to his sister Helen, and Peter Fitzsimons and family Barnigue, and other relatives around the locality. John was laid to rest in Chertsey, Shephardon. May he rest in Peace.

MUSIC SPEAKS: Nursing Home week was held from Monday August 21 to Sunday August 27. It is the annual celebration of nursing home care in Ireland with a series of events and activities. To mark the week, over 100 residents and staff from 30 nursing homes across Ireland were recorded singing, and playing in the Music Speaks broadcast, showcasing their talents. Limerick residents are well represented with Noel Smith from Glensharrold singing ”Never Grow Old” and 100-year-old Peig Ryan from Murroe playing her polka on the concertina. NHE.ie will access the broadcast on Youtube.

FLAG FLOOR: A mighty night of music song dance and storytelling was held at the Flag Floor Rambling House on Tuesday August 22. A large crowd attended including guests from the Kilfinane area who participated in the recent Hup Na Houra Seisiun nights at the old chapel rooms. They gave a display of set dancing and the brush dance. Maureen and Chris Culleton from Ballyfin Laois made a first visit. Maureen is a set dancing workshop teacher, and she performed the old style dance The Priest in his Boots to great applause. She had her own rambling house sessions before Covid struck and is a great promoter of dancing all her life.

The local young set dancers performed the West Limerick Polka set and recitations were delivered by Ita Mc Quinn, and Ger O’Connell. Songs came from Con Fitzgerald, Nuala Quinn and Maureen Culleton and musicians included Donie Nolan, Mike O’Sullivan, Anita Bennis, Con Herbert, Charlie Reynolds, Liam Flanagan. The session continues each Tuesday from 9pm to 11.30pm, Teas are served, admission is € 5, and all are welcome.

PRIMARY CARE CENTRE: The recently completed Primary Care Centre at Station Road, Gortboy, Newcastle West is open for a few services and adding more as it is moving close to official opening. PLANNING PERMISSION: St Kieran’s GAA Club are applying to Limerick City and County Council for planning permission for A, construction of a GAA clubhouse with changing rooms, and ancillary services, wastewater treatment, system and percolation area, B, revised car parking layout to that granted under 22/228 at Cross and Ministerland Ardagh.

GAELIC GAMES: St Kieran’s were defeated by Father Casey’s by 1-14 to 1-9 in Round 4 of Group 1 of the County Senior Football Championship played at Newcastle West Gaelic Grounds on Thursday August 24. They trailed by 1-7 to 1-4 at half time after playing with the wind. They are now out of the championship and play Claughaun in Round 5 needing a result to avoid being drawn into the relegation playoffs. LADIES FOOTBALL: Congratulations to Linda Lodge, the former Old Mill player who lined out in goals for Michael Cusack’s Sydney who defeated Clan Na Gael by 3-7 to 2-3 in the final of the New South Wales Senior Ladies Championship Final. It was their fourth title in a row and Linda has been very involved in their successes. In round 1 of the Limerick County Ladies Championship Old Mill lost to Monagea by 0-15 to 1-11 at Old Mill on Sunday August 20. They play Feohanagh/Castlemahon in Round 2 at Coolyroe on Tuesday August 29.

CLUB DRAW: The monthly Limerick GAA Club draw was held on Saturday August 26, and announced on the Sports Show on Limerick Live 95. The St Kieran’s club had two winner this month. Congratulations to Kenneth Greaney who won € 500 and Thos Keane/Noel Fitzgerald who won € 300. People can still join for the remaining five draws by contacting the club promoters.

LOTTERY DRAW: The Ardagh Development Association and Saint Kieran’s GAA joint weekly lottery draw took place on Monday August 21. The numbers drawn were 6,12,24,26,and there was no winner of the € 14,200 Jackpot. GALBALLY WALK: The annual walk to Darby’s Bed in Galbally will be held on Saturday September 2, with registration at 10-30am. A second shady lane walk to Castlecreagh on the same day offers the opportunity to enjoy more spectacular views and is suitable for all comers. Registration at Canon Hennessy Community Centre in Galbally village at 10.30am and there is no charge. All participants are encouraged to contribute to a bucket collection which will go towards the purchase of a new Defibrillator for the Hill Walking Radio Group. All will be entered to a free raffle and tea and refreshments will be served afterwards. Participants in both walks are advised to wear sturdy footwear with weather appropriate clothing. SACRISTANS COLLECTION: Coolcappa/Kilcolman parish sacristan’s collection will be taken up on Saturday September 2 at the 7.30pm Mass in St Colman’s Church Kilcolman. Please indicate which church sacristan your donation is for on the envelope which is included in your box of envelopes. Both Kathleen and Mary provide a great service and deserve the parishes support.

SET CÉILÍ: A set Céilí will be held in the hall Milford (P56 PN28) on Saturday September 2, from 9pm.(earlier start time this year). It is a very popular venue for West Limerick dancers and a warm welcome awaits all. Music by Ui Bhriain Céilí Band and tea and treats served. Admission is € 10.

CEMETERY MASS: Mass will be celebrated in Clonagh old graveyard Reens, on Sunday September 3 at 2pm.

OSKAR FUNDRAISERS: A number of fundraising events will be held by the St Kieran’s GAA Club in the run up to the Oskar night in the Devon Inn on Saturday November 11. A family fun day will be held in Coolcappa GAA grounds on Sunday September 10, with all the groups holding an event. The Field cast members will be holding a kids back to school Disco on Friday September 8, in Coolcappa Community Hall, plus a sponsored walk along the Ardagh Greenway on Sunday September 17. The Peaky Blinders members will be holding a pig race in Neary’s Bar Ardagh on Saturday September 23.

FLEADH CHEOIL: Congratulations to the dancers and musicians representing Ardagh/Carrigkerry Comhaltas who enjoyed a very successful weekend in Mullingar bringing home several All-Ireland titles and medals to the locality. Well done to all involved in the branch who keep the flag flying in traditional circles. A number of locals attended the weeklong event and enjoyed a feast of traditional music, song, dance and story. The coverage on TG4 over four nights was also very entertaining.

JOAN RELIHAN: The death has taken place of Joan Relihan, Kilscannell, Ardagh peacefully at University Hospital Limerick on Sunday August 13. Predeceased by her parents Michael and Ellen, sisters Eily, and Mary O’Brien. Reposing was held at St Kyran’s Church Coolcappa, on Monday August 14 from 6-30pm to 8pm. Her Requiem Mass was celebrated on Tuesday at 12noon, followed by burial in Kilscannell Cemetery. Sympathy to her brother Michael (Sonny), nephews, nieces, grand-nephews, grand-nieces, relatives, and friends. May she rest in Peace.

MAI AHERNE: The death has taken place of Mai Aherne (nee Walker) Old Kildimo, Kildimo, Co. Limerick and formerly of Rooska, Newcastle West peacefully on Friday August 11, at University Hospital Limerick after a short illness. Predeceased by her husband Christy (a native of Glensharrold, Carrigkerry) and her son Georgie. Reposing took place at her house at Old Kildimo, Kildimo, between 4 and 7pm on Sunday August 13. The funeral cortege arrived at St Joseph’s Church, Kildimo on Monday morning for Requiem Mass at 12 noon, followed by burial in Old Kildimo Graveyard. Sympathy to her sons Noel and Kevin and daughter Mairead (McKenna), son-in-law Timmy, daughter-in-law Jane, her grandchildren Christopher, Cora, Maura, Lucy, Molly, Thomas, Jack, Molly and Darragh, her great grandchildren, Liam, Riain, George, Teddy, Penny, Nell, extended family, Rowena, Mary, Kathleen, Marcella, Lesley Ann and a large circle of friends. May she rest in Peace.

BALLYINE MASS: Mass was celebrated by Fr Michael Noonan at Ballyine Mass Rock on Tuesday August 15, to mark the Feast of the Assumption. The weather was ideal and over 80 people were in attendance. The choir enhanced the ceremony with appropriate hymns to our Blessed Lady. The Leahy family allowed access to the venue, prepared the shrine, altar and supplied refreshments for all after the mass. Bernard, Conor, and Pat participated in the ceremony and John P O’Sullivan erected the flags and allowed a pathway through his farm. Ballyine Shrine was officially opened on August 15, 1954, to mark Marian Year in Ireland. It will celebrate its 70th Anniversary next year and hopefully an event will be held to mark the occasion.

The concession of 2-1 in the opening 10 minutes was a mountain to high to climb and they now find themselves in need of results in their remaining two matches. LADIES FOOTBALL: The Old Mill Ladies Football Club hosted the homecoming event for the Limerick football team on Monday August 14. The Old Mill club were represented by four players on the Limerick panel defeated by Down by 1-7 to 0-8 in the All-Ireland Junior final the previous day in Croke Park, Róisín Ambrose (Captain), Sophie Hennessy, Alva Quaid, Iris Kennelly. Well done to the four and the Limerick team who came so close to victory.

AWARDS NIGHT: Creeves Celtic soccer club are holding an awards night for the Under 12 Girls and Under 13 and Under 14 Boys on Sunday August 27 at 6pm at The Thatch Bar Newbridge. The club were very successful last season, and an enjoyable night is promised. The club will be holding a Quiz night on Friday September 15, at 9pm, also at the Thatch. GLIN CASTLE: Guided tours of Glin Castle and gardens will be held on Sunday September 3, from 12 noon to 6pm. Tickets are available at the entrance gate for €10. A raffle will be held and refreshments available. The Glin Knights visitor centre next to the library is open daily from 10am to 5pm with free admission.

ARDNACRUSHA TOURS: The general public can still avail of a tour of Ardnacrusha Power Station up to Friday September 8. Visitors are welcomed to the Ardnacrusha Power Station Experience at the Visitors’ Centre before going out on site to view the impressive headrace canal, locks and tailrace. Once inside the station, the living heritage of Shannon Scheme is brought to life through a series of animations which celebrate the history and impact of this iconic project. Visitors are given access to the very heart of the station with unique views of the turbine hall and a visit to the original control room. JOHN BARRETT: The death has taken place of John Barrett, after a short illness in New York aged 66. Formerly of 8 The Cross Ardagh. He was predeceased by his parents John and Philomena, brothers Christopher and Jimmy and sister Peggy. He learned the hairdressing trade in London and was a celebrity hairdresser in his salon Bergdorf Goodman and recently at his JB 57 Studio Manhattan for over 20 years. The Limerick man was well known for the catchphrase which would summarize his work: “It’s not just about the hair, it’s about the care.” His clientele was a star-studded testament to his talents, and included Princess Diana, Julia Roberts, Victoria Beckham, Reese Witherspoon, the Olsen Twins, Martha Stewart, Beyonce, Helena Bonham Carter, Serena Williams, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. A Memorial service was held in Franke E Cambell Funeral Chapel 1076 Madison Avenue on Monday 14th August at 2 pm. Followed by cremation service. A Service in Ireland will be at a later date. Sympathy is extended to his brothers Pat, Mike, Eddie, Joe, Gerry and sister Kathleen, their families, and a large circle of friends in New York and the Ardagh region. May he rest in Peace.

VINTAGE DAY: Carrigkerry Playground and Sensory Park fundraising vintage run and family Day took place on Sunday August 6. BALLAD COMPETITION: The Sean McCarthy Memorial Ballad Competition 2023 was held in Finuge on Sunday August 6 as part of the weekend festival. Congratulations to Gerry Keogh Killoughteen who emerged the winner with his song ”Safe Harbour” over 17 other participants. Gerry works locally and is very involved in the entertainment scene and released a CD a few years ago.

BRIDGE REPAIRS: Limerick Council workers have been repairing a bridge over the river Slewnaun at Glenville in recent weeks. It has been stripped down and is being renovated in the new. Work at Ardagh Junction is near complete with the building of new Piers outside Fr Michael Noonan’s house and timber poles inserted for wire fencing.

COLLECTION THANKS: The organisers of Deel Animal Rescue wish to thank all who contributed to their recent collection held in Carrigkerry ( € 108.50) and Ardagh ( € 213) it is very much appreciated.

REMEMBRANCE MASS: Dromcollogher Respite Care Centre annual Mass of Remembrance will be held on Sunday August 20, at 7pm in St Bartholomew’s Church Dromcollogher. All family, relatives, neighbours and friends of people who have spent time there and have now departed this life are invited to pray for and remember them during the ceremony.

RAMBLING HOUSE: The next rambling house will be held at Hall Beag Knockaderry on Sunday August 20, following the Village Fayre. All musicians, singers’ dancers and storytellers are most welcome to attend on the night.

SINGING CLUB: The Garry Mc Mahon Singing Weekend hosted by the West Limerick Singing Club will take place in Abbeyfeale from Friday October 13, to Sunday 15. The closing date for entries to the newly composed traditional ballad competition is Monday August 28. Ballads must be original and not previously performed or published in public. They can be in English or Irish and sung in the traditional style. The entry fee is € 20, and application forms are available on the West Limerick Singing Club Facebook page, or direct from West Limerick Singing Club c/o Mary O’Connor (Secretary), Peacehaven, Radharc Na Coille, Moyderwell, Tralee, Co. Kerry V92 HN2K. The first prize is € 500, second prize is € 300, and third prize is € 100, and the competition will be held on Saturday October 14.

OSKAR FUNDRAISERS: A number of fundraising events will be held by the St Kieran’s GAA Club in the run up to the Oskar night in the Devon Inn on Saturday November 11. A family fun day will be held in Coolcappa GAA grounds on Sunday September 10, with all the groups holding an event. The cast members and associates of each of the 8 chosen films will be holding individual events in the coming weeks. The Calendar Girls will be holding a Table Quiz in Moore’s Bar Carrigkerry on Saturday August 26 and another one at Neary’s Bar Ardagh on Friday October 6. The Field cast members will be holding a kids back to school Disco on Friday September 8, in Coolcappa Community Hall, plus a sponsored walk along the Ardagh Greenway on Sunday September 17. The Peaky Blinders members will be holding a pig race in Neary’s Bar Ardagh on Saturday September 23. They are currently running a FIFA Women’s World Cup Sweepstake.

The Bridesmaids cast will be running a number of events beginning with a Bingo Loco event in Neary’s Bar Ardagh on Friday September 29. They will hold a clothes collection in Ardagh and Coolcappa on November 4, and 5. They will also raffle a signed jersey donated by the senior Limerick hurlers. The cast of Fr Ted will be holding an Irish traditional music night on Friday October 13 in Ardagh Hall. They will hold a static cycle event at the family fun day in Coolcappa on Sunday September 10.The Veronica Guerin cast will be hosting a Guinness Book of World Records event in Coolcappa on Sunday October 29, a Movie Day and a Quiz Night in Reens Bar with dates to be confirmed. The cast of the Snapper will be holding a Halloween Fancy Dress Disco, Rugby World Cup Sweepstake and a Tractor run. More details later.

Parish Notes Sunday August 6th 23

JOHN MC KENNA: The death has taken place of John (Jack ) Mc Kenna, Ardagh and formerly of Kildimo and Knocknagoshel on Tuesday August 1 at University Hospital Limerick. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Jack was held at St Molua’s Church Ardagh on Friday August 4 from 11.30am. The Requiem Mass was celebrated at 1pm, followed by a private Cremation. Sympathy to his wife Honor, children Jacqueline, John, Timmy, Ann, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and a wide circle of friends. Jack was a stone mason, carver, and musician whose work can be seen around Ardagh village. May he rest in Peace.

GAELIC GAMES: St Kieran’s defeated Croom by 2-15 to 0-14 in round one of the County Limerick Intermediate Hurling Championship played at Coolyroe on Friday August 4. They led by 1-9 to 0-8 at half time TEAM Cillian Ambrose, Diarmuid Mulcahy, Johnny Mc Carthy, Aaron Heffernan, Anthony Mullins, Brendan Mc Carthy, Cathal Mc Enery, Jack Ben Harnett, Sean Ryan, Fionn Gleeson, Eoin Mc Enery, Mossie Shine, Ian Mackessy, James Muckell, Mikey Long. St Kieran’s were defeated by Galtee Gaels by 1-10 to 0-6 in the County Under 19 Football Championship (14 a side)played at Knocklong on Tuesday August 1. They trailed by 1-7 to 0-3 at half time. TEAM Oisin Ryan, Bryan Sheahan, Darragh Mc Mahon, Sean Long, Conor Kelly, Mikey Kelly, Lorcan Murphy, Fionn Gleeson, Cormac Murphy, Mikey Long, Derry O’Connor, Con Enright, Luke Corrigan. John Doyle from the St Kieran’s club was a member of the Limerick masters football team defeated by Cork 0-15 to 1-11 at Mitchelstown on Saturday July 29.

LADIES FOOTBALL: Limerick meet Down in the All-Ireland Ladies Junior Football Championship Final on Sunday August 13 at 11.45am as part of a triple programme at Croke Park. The Old Mill club will be represented by four players on the Limerick panel. Good wishes are extended to Róisín Ambrose (Captain), Sophie Hennessy, Alva Quaid, Iris Kennelly and the Limerick squad in their quest to claim the honours. The match will be shown live on TG4.

SPLIT THE POT: Congratulations to John Gillard who won € 547 in the June, Creeves Celtic FC Split the Pot monthly draw held at the Thatch Newbridge on Wednesday August 2. LOTTERY DRAW: The Ardagh Development Association and Saint Kieran’s GAA joint weekly lottery draw took place on Monday July 31. The numbers drawn were 4,15,19,20,and there was no winner of the € 13,900 Jackpot. FLEADH 23: Best wishes to all the dancers and musicians from the Ardagh/Carrigkerry Comhaltas branch who are taking part in the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil in Mullingar from Sunday August 6, to Monday August 14. A number of people from the locality will be attending to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the entertainment on offer. Viewers can watch the action on TG4 for four consecutive nights from Thursday August 10 at 9.30pm.

HERITAGE WEEK: National Heritage week takes place from Saturday August 12 to Sunday August 20. A wide variety of events, talks, walks, exhibitions, workshops, will take place around the county to mark and celebrate all things heritage around our communities. West Limerick community radio Exchange Programme presenter Shirley O’Regan will feature a number of heritage related stories on Mondays and Fridays from 11-1pm. Commencing on Monday 13, with a repeat airing that night.

BEACH EVENT: The Old Mill Ladies Football club are holding their annual gathering of football and fun on Ballybunion beach on Saturday August 12, from 10.30am to 12 noon.

FUN DAY: Loughill Family Fun Day will be held on Saturday August 12 from 1pm in the Abha Bhán Parish Park. A lot of family fun events will be held including tug-o-war, duck race, community games. A food and craft fair will be held in the Resource Centre. The entry fee is €5 per person or €10 per family.

CHARITY CÉILÍ: The second annual charity Céilí will be held in Knocknagoshel Community Centre V92WV70 on Sunday August 13 from 3pm. Music by Jerry Mc Carthy and proceeds in aid of the Carers Association. Admission € 10 and your support is appreciated.

SET CÉILÍ: A free set Céilí will be held in the Marquee in Feakle East Clare on Monday August 14 at 7pm. Music by Taylor’s Cross. On Saturday August 12 the Star of Munster will play in the Community Hall at 9.30pm. On Sunday August 13 the Tulla Céilí Band will play in the marquee at 10pm. Admission for both these nights is € 10.

BARRIGONE PATTERN: Barrigone/Robertstown Community Group are holding a family fun day on Tuesday August 15, at 4pm following the 3pm Mass and rounds at the Blessed Well Barrigone. The venue is at Hazelfield Barrigone V94 E5XC. The list of events includes the final of the Voice of Barrigone with € 1,000 in prize money. RAMBLING HOUSE: The next rambling house will be held at Ballyhahill Hall on Wednesday August 16, at 8pm. All musicians, singers’ dancers and storytellers are most welcome to attend on the night.

SEISIÚN NIGHTS: The very enjoyable Seisiún Shows are currently being held throughout Ireland during July and August. Templeglantine Comhaltas Branch will host the Limerick show at the Devon Inn Hotel on Thursday nights at 8.30pm. Visitors and locals can enjoy a great night’s entertainment and can participate if they wish in the proceedings in the second half of the show. Admission adults € 7, children €3 and all are welcome. In Cork on Tuesday nights at 9pm at Bruach na Carriage Rockchapel, €5 and on Wednesday nights at 8pm at Freemount Heritage Centre, € 10 tea and treats.

MOUNT TRENCHARD: The Mount Trenchard house and gardens Foynes is open Monday to Friday during June, July and August from 9am to 1pm daily. Heritage week August 12-20, 9am to 5pm. Weekends by appointment. Fee adult € 8, pensioners/children/students € 4. It is a very interesting place to visit with its storied past as a boarding school and association with the Spring Rice family.

GLENVILLE HOUSE: Glenville House and Gardens Ardagh will be open for (Heritage Week) August 11-20, inclusive. Tuesday to Saturday from 9-30am to 1-30pm. Admission € 5, Students €3, children and old age pensioners are free. The house is located a mile from Ardagh on the Kilcolman road and is well worth a visit.
